Crowns & bridges are fixed dental solutions for restoration or replacement of missing natural teeth.

What is a Crown (Cap)?

A dental crown or a “cap” is a covering that fits over a damaged, decayed or fractured tooth. A crown completely covers a tooth above the gums and strengthens the damaged tooth allowing them to function normally.

A crown is recommended to

  • Protect a weak or fractured tooth
  • Cover a decayed tooth after root canal treatment
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Attach a bridge
Types of Dental Crown

There are many types of dental crown based on the materials used in manufacturing them.

  • Metal Crown
  • Porcelain fused to metal crown (PFM)
  • Gold Crown
  • All Porcelain Crown
  • Zirconia Crown
  • E-Max Crown

Although the gold and metal crowns have high strength, they don’t make a very popular choice today due to their color and aesthetics.

Porcelain fused to metal crown (PFM):

PFM is one of the most commonly used crowns. It is also known as metal ceramic crown. PFM crowns consist of an inner metal structure and an outer porcelain (ceramic) coat that covers the cap.

Advantages of PFM crowns:
  • Both strength and aesthetics
  • Been in use for over 40-50 years
  • More economical than all ceramic
Disadvantages of PFM crowns:
  • More prone to chipping and fracture
  • Gumline darkness near the PFM Crown due to the metal
  • More tooth structure is lost
  • Allergy to the metallic components
  • Cannot achieve perfect tooth color match
Zirconia Crowns:

Zirconia Crowns are famous for its strength and durability along with its aesthetic appearance. They are highly translucent in nature.

Advantages of Zirconia Crowns:
  • Strong and long lasting
  • Great aesthetics
  • More biocompatible than PFM Crowns
Disadvantages of Zirconia Crowns:
  • Its abrasive quality tends to cause friction against the opposite teeth
  • Zirconia crowns are difficult for minor adjustments
E-Max Crowns:

E-Max Crowns are the latest and newest type of all ceramic crown in dentistry. They are preferred due to their highly attractive appearance which is also light & thin.

Advantages of E-Max Crowns:
  • They have great aesthetics, so it is hard to spot an E-Max Crown amongst natural teeth
  • Durable and strong
  • Less risk of chipping compared to PFM & Zirconia Crowns
  • Considered the best match for your own natural teeth due to its transparent color and life like shape
  • No metals are used so no risk of allergy
Disadvantages of E-Max Crowns:
  • More expensive than the other types of crowns
What is a Bridge?

A Bridge is a fixed restoration for replacing one or more missing teeth. They are the best alternatives for dentures. Most dental bridges are made up of porcelain.

Why do I need a bridge for my missing teeth?
  • By nature, teeth are aligned next to each other and they work together. If a tooth is lost, the nearby tooth may tilt or drift into the empty space. Also, the opposing tooth may shift up or drift down into the space. All these can totally affect your bite.
  • Most importantly, the bone (jawbone) underlying the missing tooth may shrink. It makes lesser support for lips and cheek. Over time, this can make your face look older.
